My Story

Rocky is a very special, 9 year old basset hound who was surrendered by his dad to a local veterinarian because of a back injury. Rocky’s dad could not afford to treat him. At that time, Rocky had limited use of his rear legs & horrible sores from dragging his paws & legs behind him. The vet reached out to Suncoast Basset Rescue for help and we took on the challenge & began coordinating his treatments immediately. Rocky was seen by a veterinary neurosurgeon who reviewed his radiographs and did a preliminary assessment of his injury.  He also had an MRI to determine exactly what is going on with his back.  He was diagnosed with a bulging disc and surgery was recommended for him. The surgeon believed that Rocky was a good candidate for surgery. After several months of being in his foster home, Rocky had back surgery to repair a herniated disc. He went through intense physical therapy and hydro therapy following this surgery. He has regained muscle mass and full use of his legs. Moving forward he can lead a normal basset hound life but he can never be allowed to jump up or down on furniture or in the car. Rocky’s foster family says he is a very sweet, gentle, loving boy, who gets along with other dogs. Throughout his recovery, he has been nothing but willing to please!  We are extremely happy to say that Rocky has made a full recovery and is now medically cleared.
